Baccarat is one of the most elegant card games in casino gaming, and understanding its terminology is essential for both new and experienced players. This glossary covers fundamental concepts that form the foundation of baccarat gameplay.
The Banker Hand
One of the two primary betting positions in baccarat. The Banker represents the dealer's hand and historically has a slight mathematical advantage due to acting after the Player. Despite its name, the Banker hand is simply a betting position available to all players. Winning Banker bets typically pay 1:1 minus a 5% commission to the house, accounting for the positional advantage.
The Player Hand
The second primary betting position in standard baccarat gameplay. Players wager on the Player hand without actually playing the cards themselves. All betting decisions are predetermined by established rules. Player bets pay even money (1:1) with no commission, making them attractive despite the slightly lower statistical probability of winning compared to the Banker position.
Tie Bet
A wager that both the Banker and Player hands will achieve equal point totals. Tie bets pay significantly higher odds, typically 8:1 or 9:1, reflecting their lower probability of occurrence. However, the house edge on Tie bets is considerably higher than other available wagers, making it a less favorable option from a mathematical perspective.
Natural Win
A Natural Win occurs when either the Banker or Player hand receives an initial two-card total of 8 or 9 points. This results in an immediate win without additional cards being drawn. An 8 is called a "Small Natural" and a 9 is called a "Big Natural." Natural wins end the round immediately.
